Arrggg! The time I wasted searching avrfreaks (and elsewhere) for that
info. Its not obvious.
As it turns out I've been in touch with the Debian maintainer who
pointed me to the patches on freebsd.org... He is going to try and merge
outstanding patches into gcc-avr 4.3
