As you can read in the datasheet on page 291
(VINT Internal Voltage Reference min:2.3 typ:2.56 max:2.7 V)
If you think that's accurate enough, use it,
sure it depends on the application you're using the
adc for. But for a 10bit adc this reference isn't very
good!

I am using a Mega32 ADC using the internal 2.56v
voltage reference. I'm not convinced that it is
providing 2.56v. It appears that I can measure
the voltage at the Vref pin. If so, it measures
2.464v. I can connect an external reference but
I would to use the internal one as long it is
accurate enough.
