AFAICT, this is a limitation of AVRstudio 3.x.

3.56 runs to some degree, but it cannot be installed there. So you
need to install it on a Windows machine, and transfer the tree to the
Unix machine. I've tried to get it to run on FreeBSD, with moderate
success.
AVRstudio 4.x doesn't even start under Wine.
