I am running the AVR toolchain on OS X as we speak and if you don't mind Makefiles, it's not hard at all to set up.  It's even fairly easy to setup an X-Code document from which you can compile, etc just as you do for native stuff (you still have to know Makefiles though).

Ok,

I'm gonna ask a really evil question: anyone thought of installing WinAVR under WinE on OS X / Linux?  I don't suppose I should even have the guts to state my reasoning for asking this.  Let's just say I've recently been through a ground-up ARM-gcc build/install, and I can officially say I prefer my developement tools in a ready-to-use format.  That and I'm thinking of one of the new intel-based MAC's.  Microsoft Outlook's complete inability to reliably synch PIM with a phone is seriously causing me to consider a painful switch.  Activesynch is a dog, and say what you will about apple, they don't release stuff that doesn't work...

On that same note, anyone have a good PIM app that works between Linux & PalmOS?  Or is that wishful thinking?  Whatever happened to those PDA's that ran embedded Linux?  Still around?  Do they run an ARM inside, or what?  I figure with a Linux PDA, you could just use CVS to do your synching, if the PIM was stored as text...
