My apologies in sending it to the wrong list.
Thanks for the tip, but my query is more in line with creating a
archive/executable like functionality e.g.
install_ABC=hello_world
hello_world_SRC=a.xyz b.xyz c.xyz
leads to
hello_world:
$(MYARCHIVER) $(MYFLAGS) a.xyz b.xyz c.xyz > $@; ...

This looks more like an automake question, so I've redirected the mail
accordingly. Perhaps the answer already lies in the automake manual, in
creating your own suffix rules:
