Most likely all you are missing is adding umax4100 to the list of
backends in configure.in (BACKENDS="...").  Then rerun autoconf.

This really is not a question for the automake list.  In fact, it has
nothing whatsoever to do with neither autotools, but is rather
appropriate on one of the SANE mailing lists.  Be sure to read

and if you ask questions on their lists, it might be helpful to add a
pointer to the archive of this discussion.
