What about the following middleground solution.  In this period, I'll
commit to maint and master only obvious bug and documentation fixes
and *maybe* obvious testsuite additions (*not* testsuite churn and
"improvements").  If there are some patch series tackling issues more
"meaty" than those, and I wish to push them quickly to avoid, say,
bitrotting and housekeeping complication on my part, I'll do that to
temporary public branches, so that you'll be able to review them
easily at a later date, and suggest any needed fix before they're
merged back to maint/master (or maybe motivate why those branches
should be scrapped, even if I hope this won't be the case).

This proposed solution would be particularly useful if I'll be able
to do some more work on java support in the bried period.
