It also works when I use /usr/bin/python (oops):
checking for python... /usr/bin/python
checking for python version... 2.5
checking for python platform... darwin
checking for python script directory...
${prefix}/lib/python2.5/site-packages
checking for python extension module directory...
${exec_prefix}/lib/python2.5/site-packages

Note, if you want to restrict this to darwin there is no need to use
AC_CANONICAL_HOST, you can just use $am_cv_python_platform ...

I reported the odd behavior to Apple as rdar://problem/6903801, and it
came back today closed as a duplicate of rdar://problem/6132558.
(rdar:// urls are visible to some lucky people, probably none of whom
are on this list).
