Scratch this latter sentence.
Actually, I've just figured that the current definition of
INSTALL_STRIP_PROGRAM in AM_PROG_INSTALL_STRIP prevents the user
from running `make install-strip' from a subdirectory. Because
the `cd $_am_dirpart' relies on being executed at the toplevel.
So the definition needs a fix anyway.
