Can you send a unidiff of the broken case and a working case (/bin/sh)
for the config.status file and the Makefile which causes make to bail?
Also, which zsh version is this?

Try
CONFIG_SHELL=/bin/sh
export CONFIG_SHELL
$CONFIG_SHELL ./configure [OPTIONS...]
