While we're on the subject of bugs in AS_HELP_STRING, will your proposed 
patch also address the premature folding of its second argument, if it 
happens to contain quadrigraphs?  This would seem to be because 
AS_HELP_STRING incorrectly counts the length of a quadrigraph as four 
characters, when in fact they should be counted as only one.

And yes, I know I can work around that by appending additional text after 
the closing parenthesis of AS_HELP_STRING, but then I loose some of the 
formatting capability I wanted to use AS_HELP_STRING for, in the first 
place, so I might as well just use manually preformatted text.
