You're not alone.  Lots of people are running into this.
Looks like this is a common stumbling block.

This is odd because "path" is right there in Autom4te/Request.pm,
at least in my copy of autoconf-2.59.  Can you reproduce the
problem after updating to autoconf-2.59?
