autoreconf hangs

I'm not able to get autoreconf to work at all, it just hangs:

bash-2.03$ autoreconf --install --verbose --debug

autoreconf: working in `.'


It hangs forever(?) here.


bash-2.03$ uname -a
SunOS dhcppc4 5.8 Generic_108528-15 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-5_10


Anyone have any idea what to do to track this down?  I know
nothing about perl.
