It's been there forever (> 8 years), but used to be more buggy
(bugfixes in 2.54, 2.59c).  I haven't *tested* though whether
it works with older versions, and I'm not inclined to do so.
If you are motivated, be my guest, and I'll gladly document it.

However, Eric needs to agree that we want to document this at all.
