Independently of this issue in Autoconf (well, really this *really*
smart idea of the Apple devs), users of Autoconf 2.61 will have this
anyway when they work with libtool.  So how about you just go ahead with
libtool using Autoconf 2.61 or whatever you used before, and if there is
a couple more files to remove for distcheck to pass on your system, just
put a workaround in libtool's Makefile.am.  It's not like it's a big
problem in practice if distcheck doesn't pass on all systems.

That way we can take our time fixing this right in Autoconf.
(Meaning, including a testcase that exposes this, testing before the
next Autoconf release that the testsuite passes on your system, and
trying not to break things more than necessary for GCC, which uses the
undocumented macros _AC_COMPILER_EXEEXT and _AC_COMPILER_OBJEXT).
