Agreed.  However, the set of people/env who have run libtool 1.5 probably
isn't entirely unlike the set of people/env who will run next generation
configure scripts.

That is quite reasonable.  I just wanted to be heard saying that IMHO
functionless shells do not intersect with future uses of function-y configure
scripts.
