Follow-up Comment #3, patch #7788 (project autoconf-archive): Hmm... There's no "detecting" in this macro in the usual autoconf sense-- it merely looks for the installed h5cc/h5pcc/etc compiler wrappers and scrapes their output. I could see adding some linking tests at the end of ax_lib_hdf5.m4 to verify that the libraries link correctly on the target (and therefore detect the problem you report), but I'm unsure how to extend the current scraping approach to do what you want (which I agree is the right thing). I'll admit I'm not familiar with using HDF5 wrappers for cross-compilation.
