Yes, that is interesting, nice and simple! I figured that I used
preview-latex in the past, which renders an actual number.
Only with either of them, I get quite a ragged somewhat ugly layout on
screen when doing `fill-paragraph'. This is obviously because it
formats the actual text, not what is displayed on screen. I guess this
is the price to pay, but I should do a bit of research to see if there
is a solution.
