I'm afraid that I don't experience such delay. If you could provide
sample file and procedure to reproduce the glitch you described, we
might be able to examine its detail.

As far as I know, tex-fold.el and font-latex.el are developped
independently and not tuned to cooperate in their finest level yet. I
hope someone else who knows this area better than I shed light on this
issue.
