More banal than that, I guess. Misinterpreting UTF-8 as Latin-1 frequently cranks out à (character code 0xc3 in Latin-1 which is the lead-in character for Unicode characters 0xc0 to 0xff).
Indeed ---as I said in my previous reply to Tassilo, I'm accustomed to this with files coming from Windows.
I did a good cleaning of these files ---twice in GEdit and TeXworks before copy-pasting in Emacs.
I'll keep checking with git (I do it twice ---before staging the files and after commit), and will do the final run on my G5 Mac.
