Dear listmembers,
probably you will tell me to ask this to opensuse folks, but nevertheless:
1.) when I enter the emacs-customization menu, move forward from wp-group to
tex to auctex and try to modify Tex Pdf Mode from "off" to "on" and say "save
for future sessions" I get an error about unmatched parentheses.

The Message buffer says:
forward-sexp: Scan error: "Unbalanced parentheses", 996, 7860

The error is caused by the modify-syntax-entry - line in .gnu-emacs-custom:
<more commands>
         ;; It's german:
         ;; Deutsche Tastatur im LaTeX-German-Style/Babel-Class
         ;; ---------------------------------------------------
         ;;    Aktivierung mit `M-x german-mode' -> man dr"ucke
         ;;    *nacheinander* <ComposeCharacter>, <">, <a> und staune!
         ;; ACHTUNG: Bei grossen Files sehr LANGSAM beim Abspeichern
         ;; das ist vom Prinzip her bedingt! Hier gibt's keinen Support!
         ;;      (require 'ger-keys)
         ;; End bracket closing
         ;; For ISO Latin standard: Macro out of `ger-keys'
         ;; ger-keys should be loaded
         ;;      (german-mode)
         ;; For german style usage:
         (modify-syntax-entry ?" "w")
<more commands>

No error happens at boot time, emacs loads and (at least seems to ...) accept
the command, however, the customization - save function does not.
Any ideas? Is that auctex related by any means? Should I report this to the
emacs-devel list?

2.) I am using the GTK+ Version of emacs. Every other time when I press C-C in
auctex mode to view the file I just compiled (using xdvi) nothing happens, I
hear a beep. In such a case I have to quit the minibuffer and reissue the
command. I think this could be related to the speed of C-C, but I am not sure
about that. Anybody having hints how to debug this?

Thank you very much,
take care

if you really want to see the pictures above - use some font
