if I get you right when I update Auctex the value of "TeX-print-command"
should be preserved. Hope you are right!

tex-mik.el tries to preserve a customized value. So you should be able
to customize `TeX-print-command' via
M-x customize-variable <RET> TeX-print-command <RET>
