Depending on your TeX distribution, there might be problems with UTF-8
encoded files.  I don't know if it works for math at all.  But I never
tried so correct me if I'm wrong.

This test file doesn't work for me:

\documentclass[a4paper]{article}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\begin{document}
München

$α$ % <== Error here!
\end{document}
