Could you explain what you actually mean by »the default path«? Do you
really speak about the PATH variable or about something else?
I keeps using PATH and am sure about this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Adam>path
PATH=C:\texmf\miktex\bin;C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem
;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec
Shared\System;C:\MATLAB7\bin\win32;C:\Ema
cs\bin;"C:\gs\gs8.51\bin";"C:\gs\gs8.51\lib";c:\usr\local\bin;"C:\Program
Files\
Ghostgum\gsview\";"c:\Program Files\Real\RealProducer Basic
10\RealMediaEditor"
C:\Documents and Settings\Adam>GSWIN32C
AFPL Ghostscript 8.51 (2005-04-18)

I have added the /lib and the /bin subdirectories of Ghostscript to the
environment variable PATH and I've never had the problems you describe.
You can check by typing 'path' at the command prompt.
