Well, in BibTeX pretty much the only _working_ thing is to use 8bit
characters.  And you'll have to adapt to other people's encodings in
many cases, anyway.  If other people _edit_ the files, you'll get
their 8bit characters peppered throughout the text (oops, overlooked
that, sorry) anyway.  And the textx _compile_ just fine even in the
"wrong" encoding.  They just look strange in their editors.
