Hi,

Thank you so much for AUCTeX! But until now I have used a very old version on my private computer (Windows 98/II, GNU Emacs 21.2.1 (i386-msvc-windows98.2222) of 2002-03-27 on NEVERYON, AUCTeX 2002-01-24, Version 11.11). The article "Installation von GNU Emacs und AUCTeX unter MS Windows" of Uwe Siart in "Die TeXnische Komoedie", issue 4/2004 has given me the drive to try an up-to-date installation under Windows 98. (The article is available for d/l on his homepage http://www.uwe-siart.de/typografie/latex.html in German.) With his help I have managed the installation. Many thanks to Uwe!

(a) I have downloaded Emacs 21.3.1 (2004-03-10) from
    http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs

(b) After having much trouble with AUCTeX 11.55 (I was not able to use multifile documents without much handwork) in May I stopped my try and do it again now. I have tried a developer version auctex-20050716-a.

(c) I'm using MSYS 1.0.10.

And now the installation:
After the first errors, reading INSTALL.windows I have the same problems as Michael Forster. I can highly recommend his article
   http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/auctex/2005-05/msg00070.html
and the steps he has done here are the same I have to do. Thank you, Michael!

O.k. installation was complete, Emacs is running with AUCTeX (after putting the recommended (require 'tex-site) and the other commands from the auctex.pdf, chapter "3 Quick start" (setq TeX-auto-save t), (setq TeX-parse-self t), (setq-default TeX-master nil)) all is working fine and multi-file documents are supported as suggested in the manual.

But the "View" command was still not working. I'm using TeXLive and I do not have xdvi and xpdf. Instead of this I'm using windvi for dvi files and start to open extensions with the associated program in Windows.

So - and I suppose this is not the suggested way - I have changed the file /site-lisp/auctex/tex.el and there I have replaced every occurence of xdvi with windvi and xpdf with start. After that all is working fine.

Best regards

Harald
