[AUCTeX] Re: preserving images, and image contrast

ok, when I use desktop (by adding desktop-load-default and desktop-read to the
end of my .emacs file), the png files are not deleted when I kill the emacs
session (though the .efmt file gets deleted). However:
1. The preview images are not restored automatically when I restart emacs in
that directory. (The buffer, point etc. are being restored, so desktop seems
to be otherwise working.)
2. I can't even regenerate the previews now - if I try C-c C-p C-d, I get
"error in process sentinel: preview-reraise-error: LaTeX found no preview 
images"

I'm attaching the output log, and the state info at the end for reference.
How is desktop supposed to know how to save and restore the images anyway?
(Presumably, desktop.el is oblivious to preview-latex?) Is there a variable
that I add to desktop's list of saved variables?
