Of course, it doesn't make much sense unless you want to build binaries for
different architectures - but it's also a way to get a clean
autoconf/automake usage.
By the way, in case you need to run autogen.sh, you *need* automake >= 1.7.5
(the latest). The automake guys have started supporting Python (quite
nicely), and previous versions doesn't support things like differently
prefixed installation.

Right - although the former worked for me too, to my surprise.
