One of my favorite OS games, Battle for Wesnoth does small sprites (50px tallest) on 640x480 quite well.

If we did use a smaller image size, we'd just have to have a large view of the map, (which would probably require large maps too)

And this could be a chance to add new technologies such as a sidebar with a map in it (which appears after one of your characters aquires a map)

But it's probably not worth it if everyone has to remake smaller images (I don't want to force anyone to do extra work because I'm eccentric. :) )

Probably a good idea for me :) I just think smaller graphics look better. Plus I'm better at making smaller character graphics ( I use mtPaint :D).
