To make the story more interesting (confused), I followed the exact same
sequence on a different distro and everything compiled as a charm.

I've also tried to diff the config/ltmain.sh with my
/usr/share/libtool/config/ltmain.sh and a huge list of differences came in.

I'm not very happy that ltmain.sh is distributed since it should be
automatically generated by the autotools (either via autogen.sh or via
autoreconf) and reflect the developer's building environment.

The TIMESTAMP variable in the ltmain.sh shipped with XForms is dated
back in 2007.
