+<p>La siguiente información se tomó de un informe que nos presentara Débora
+Badilla Huento, maestra de primaria de la ECEN. Su dedicación desempeñó un
+papel fundamental en la toma de conciencia acerca del software libre en la
+escuela, lo que en última instancia condujo a la migración.</p>
+

+<h3>Referencias</h3>

+<p>Somos una escuela cristiana privada que ofrece enseñanza desde el nivel
+infantil hasta la escuela secundaria, de acuerdo con los requisitos
+estatales para la educación.</p>
+
+<p>En Argentina, cada provincia establece su propia polÃtica educativa. En el
+caso de la provincia de Neuquén, la enseñanza de la informática en las
+escuelas primarias no es obligatoria. De hecho, es una asignatura
+extraescolar.</p>
+
+<h3>Motivos</h3>
+
+<p>Nuestra escuela defiende los ideales de solidaridad, honestidad, excelencia
+en la educación, el cumplimiento de la ley, la búsqueda constante de la
+verdad, la justicia y el amor en todas las actividades diarias. El uso y la
+enseñanza de software privativo contradecÃa estos valores. Los directores y
+profesores de la escuela se veÃan también agobiados por la gestión de las
+licencias de los programas privativos y las numerosas restricciones que los
+términos de esas licencias imponÃan a la escuela.</p>
+
+<p>Durante el proceso de decisión también se tuvieron en cuenta la calidad
+educativa y los objetivos a largo plazo. A nuestro entender, adiestrar a los
+alumnos para que aprendan a utilizar una marca especÃfica de software está
+lejos de ser la misión de una escuela.</p>
+
+<h3>Cómo lo hicimos</h3>
+
+<p>El proceso completo duró cuatro años. Cuando empezamos, en 2006, todas las
+máquinas tenÃan instalado software privativo. Terminamos en 2010 con
+programas y sistemas operativos completamente libres instalados en todas las
+máquinas de la escuela, incluyendo las oficinas y la biblioteca.</p>
+
+<p>El plan consistió principalmente en varias medidas encaminadas a la toma de
+conciencia acerca de las implicaciones filosóficas, éticas y sociopolÃticas
+de la utilización de la tecnologÃa. Este aspecto fundamental se mantuvo y se
+enfatizó durante todo el proceso, y se puso en práctica mediante la
+sustitución gradual de los programas privativos existentes por programas de
+software libre.</p>
+
+<p>Durante el primer año introdujimos algunos cursos teóricos, concretamente
+«Historia de la Informática» e «Introducción a la Arquitectura de
+Computadores». También cubrimos los aspectos legales del software, tales
+como los diferentes tipos de licencias, y hablamos sobre el compromiso de
+los usuarios y desarrolladores de software libre con la comunidad.</p>
+
+<p>Se impartieron cursos de formación para los profesores de secundaria en
+tecnologÃa informática y de todas las demás áreas, como asà también para
los
+maestros de primaria, la junta directiva, el personal de administración y el
+bibliotecario.</p>
+
+<p>Los recursos humanos empleados para llevar a cabo la migración fueron: </p>
+
+<ul>
+ <li>1 profesor de informática para los niveles de educación infantil y
+primaria. Este profesor también está a cargo del mantenimiento de los
+ordenadores en el aula y la cualificación de otros profesores y personal de
+la escuela en la utilización del sistema operativo.</li>
+ <li>5 profesores de informática para el nivel de secundaria.</li>
+ <li>1 técnico de computadoras y redes encargado de la reparación de las
máquinas
+del nivel de secundaria.</li>
+ <li>1 programador de software libre contratado para desarrollar el sistema de
+gestión administrativa.</li>
+ <li>1 profesor de tecnologÃa informática contratado para cualificar al
personal
+docente.</li>
+</ul>
+
+<p>Los gastos de la migración fueron razonables y se mantuvieron dentro del
+presupuesto de la escuela:</p>
+
+<ul>
+ <li>Reparación de máquinas: En 2006, la ECEN contrató a un técnico
informático a
+quien se le suministró la documentación del software libre y un DVD del
+sistema operativo utilizado. La escuela ha trabajando con él desde
entonces.</li>
+ <li>Capacitación: 60 horas de formación para cualificar al personal
docente.</li>
+</ul>
+
+<h3>Compromiso con el software libre</h3>
+
+<p>Desde 2010 estamos utilizando sistemas operativos completamente libres, sin
+inicio dual, de la siguiente manera:</p>
+

+ <li>22 computadoras en las aulas de educación infantil y primaria (alumnos
entre
+4 y 12 años de edad).</li>
+ <li>24 computadoras en las aulas de secundaria (alumnos entre 13 y 17 años de
+edad).</li>
+ <li>7 computadoras en las oficinas de administración.</li>
+ <li>3 computadoras en la biblioteca.</li>
+ <li>1 portátil en el aula de audiovisuales.</li>
+</ul>
+

+<p>La experiencia de la migración resultó muy positiva y decidimos adoptar un
+entorno de software libre en todas las máquinas. En octubre de 2009 la
+escuela patrocinó el «<cite>Software Freedom Day</cite>» en la ciudad de San
+MartÃn de los Andes.</p>
+
+<p>Aunque requirió mucha dedicación y perseverancia, el proceso fue muy
+agradable. Ahora difundimos lo que hemos aprendido con el fin de ayudar a
+otras comunidades educativas.</p>

+<p>The following information was extracted from a report submitted to us
+by ECEN Elementary Teacher Debora Badilla Huento. Her commitment played
+a key role in raising Free Software awareness and ultimately getting
+the school to migrate.</p>
+

+<h3>Location</h3>
+
+<p>City of Neuquén, capital of the

+Province of Neuquén</a>, in the Argentine Patagonia Region.</p>
+
+<h3>About</h3>
+
+<p>We are a private Christian school providing education from
+pre-elementary to high school levels in accord with state educational
+requirements.</p>
+
+<p>In Argentina, each province develops its own educational policy. In
+the case of the province of Neuquén, teaching computer science at
+elementary schools is not obligatory. Actually, computer science is an
+extracurricular subject.</p>
+
+<h3>Motivation</h3>
+
+<p>Our school advocates the ideals of solidarity, honesty, excellence in
+education, the observance of law, the constant search for truth, justice
+and love in all daily activities. Using and teaching proprietary
+software was in contrast with these values. School directors and
+teachers were also overwhelmed by software license management and by the
+many restrictions that the terms of those licenses imposed on the
+school.</p>
+
+<p>Educational quality and long term goals were also taken into account
+during the decision process. It is our understanding that training
+students on how to use a specific brand of software is far from the
+mission of a school.</p>
+
+<h3>How We Did It</h3>
+
+<p>The whole process lasted four years: we started in 2006 with all our
+work stations using proprietary software and concluded in 2010 with full
+free operating systems and programs in all the school's computers,
+including the administration offices and the library.</p>
+
+<p>The plan consisted mainly of several measures aimed at raising
+awareness about the philosophical, ethical and socio-political
+implications of the use of technology. This fundamental aspect was
+maintained and underlined during the whole process and put into practice
+by the gradual substitution of existing proprietary programs with Free
+Libre Software programs.</p>
+
+<p>During the first year we introduced some theoretical courses, namely
+"Computer Science History" and "Introduction to Computer Architecture".
+We also covered the legal aspects of software such as the various types
+of licenses, and we talked about the commitment of Free Software users
+and developers to the community.</p>
+
+<p>Training courses were given to high school level teachers in the IT
+and all other areas, to teachers of the elementary level, to the Board
+of Directors and administration staff, and to the librarian.</p>
+
+<p>The following human resources were employed to carry out the
+migration: </p>
+
+<ul>
+ <li>1 Computer Science teacher for the pre-elementary and elementary
+ levels. This teacher is also in charge of maintaining the computers
+ in the classroom and qualifying other teachers and school staff in the
+ use of the operating system.</li>
+ <li>5 Computer Science teachers for the high school Level.</li>
+ <li>1 PC and network technician in charge of repairing the computers
+ of the high school level.</li>
+ <li>1 Free Software programmer hired to write the Administrative
+ Management System.</li>
+ <li>1 IT Professor hired to qualify the school staff.</li>
+</ul>
+
+<p>Migration costs were affordable and well within the school's
+budget:</p>
+
+<ul>
+ <li>PC Repairs: In 2006, ECEN hired a computer technician who was
+ provided with Free Software documentation and a DVD of the operating
+ system in use. The school has been working with him since then.</li>
+ <li>Training: 60 training hours to qualify the school staff.</li>
+</ul>
+
+<h3>Commitment to Free Software</h3>
+
+<p>As of 2010, we are using fully free operating systems, non in dual
+boot, as follows:</p>
