+<p>Tux Paint es un programa de dibujo multiplataforma creado especÃficamente
+para niños. Ya desde los tres años de edad los niños aprenden a manejar el
+programa sin dificultad, gracias a una interfaz clara e intuita que incluye
+grandes botones identificados por etiquetas e iconos fácilmente
+reconocibles. En el centro de la pantalla hay un lienzo blanco para que el
+niño dibuje utilizando una amplia variedad de herramientas y pinceles. Para
+comenzar, el niño puede cargar dibujos contorneados para pintar, como en un
+libro para colorear.</p>
+
+<p>El programa incluye todas las herramientas de dibujo más conocidas como
+lÃneas y pinceles para dibujar a mano alzada y colorear, figuras
+geométricas, dimensionador, goma de borrar, las opciones «Rehacer» y
+«Deshacer», además del sonido que se oye mientras se pinta y una herramienta
+especial llamada «Mágicas» para efectos especiales: arcoÃris, brillos,

+<p>En el sitio web oficial se presentan comentarios de usuarios domésticos y
+relatos de escuelas que usan Tux Paint. Se informa que el programa es una de
+las herramientas más útiles para que los niños comiencen a adquirir las
+habilidades básicas requeridas en la gráfica computarizada, brindándoles al
+mismo tiempo un entorno que resulta altamente atractivo. Sin embargo, la
+caracterÃstica principal que lleva a preferir Tux Paint a otros programas de
+dibujo similares para niños, es el hecho de que es software libre; es decir,
+no tiene ningún tipo de restricciones y garantiza al usuario una serie de
+libertades. Por ejemplo, una de las libertades es que al usuario se le
+permite instalar el programa en tantas estaciones de trabajo como sea
+necesario, lo que es especialmente importante para las escuelas.</p>

+<p>Otra libertad importante que garantiza el Software Libre es la libertad de
+modificar el programa para adaptarlo a las necesidades del usuario y
+redistribuir copias de la versión modificada. Es gracias a esta libertad que
+Tux Paint está disponible en tantos idiomas, incluso aquellos que hablan los
+grupos minoritarios. De hecho, las traducciones a lenguas poco difundidas
+han sido realizadas por los mismos usuarios. Esto se debe a que, en la
+mayorÃa de los casos, las compañÃas cuyo negocio consiste en el desarrollo

+<p>Un buen ejemplo de cómo se puede aplicar la libertad del software en Tux
+Paint, es el trabajo hecho por niños de 11 y 12 años, alumnos de la escuela
+VHSS de Impranam en el Estado de Kerala, en India. El trabajo consistió en
+agregar una serie de sellos al programa, basados en fotografÃas tomadas por
+los mismos alumnos. Tomaron fotos de flores autóctonas y procesaron las
+imágenes digitales con el programa libre de manipulación de imágenes de GNU,
+GIMP. Añadieron también el nombre de cada flor en inglés y en malabar, su
+idioma local. Como Tux Paint tiene una función de sonido, los niños grabaron
+con sus propias voces los nombres de las flores en malabar, de modo tal que
+cuando una de estas flores es seleccionada y estampada en el lienzo , el
+usuario ve y escucha el nombre de la flor en ese idioma. <a

+<p>Otra actividad útil que se hizo en esta escuela mediante la aplicación de
la
+libertad para modificar el programa, fue la traducción de la interfaz de Tux
+Paint al malabar, la lengua que se habla en el Estado de Kerala.</p>

+<h3>Porqué</h3>
+
+<p>La libertad para modificar el programa es un recurso importante que la
+escuela usó para ir más allá de la enseñanza de habilidades básicas de
+computación gráfica o del entretenimiento de los niños. La usó para
+enseñarles que las tecnologÃas informáticas no son algo a lo que haya que
+estar sometidos, que no son algo que se le deba imponer al usuario, sino un
+instrumento que debe servir al usuario de acuerdo a sus necesidades.</p>
+
+<p>La libertad para instalar el programa en todos los ordenadores en el
+laboratiorio de informática fue también algo importante, ya que la escuela
+cuenta con recursos económicos limitados como para invertirlos en
+licencias. Al distribuir copias de la versión original y de las versiones
+modificadas del programa entre los estudiantes, la escuela asistió a
+familias con dificultades económicas.</p>
+
+<h3>Resultados</h3>
+
+<p>Añadir sellos a Tux Paint fue una experiencia apasionante y enriquecedora
+para los alumnos. Primero analizaron el funcionamiento del programa y
+descubrieron el mecanismo que usa para la implementación de los
+sellos. Luego vieron que esa caracterÃstica particular del programa permitÃa
+la adición de más sellos y aprendieron a hacerlo. También adquirieron un
+mayor conocimiento de GIMP durante la manipulación de las imágenes. Todo el
+proceso les dió la oportunidad no solo de adquirir nuevas habilidades
+técnicas sino de identificar y apreciar la flora local. Por sobre todo,
+aprendieron que cualquiera, incluso los que no son programadores, o los
+niños mismos, pueden de hecho influenciar y mejorar las tecnologÃas de la
+información cuando la libertad del software está garantizada.</p>

+<p>Tux Paint is a cross-platform drawing program created specifically
+for children. Little kids as young as 3 years old have no difficulty in
+finding their way around its clear and intuitive interface which
+features large buttons identified by a label as well as an icon so that
+the child can easily recognize them. At the center of the screen there
+is a white canvas for the child to draw making use of a wide variety of
+tools and paint brushes. As a start, the child can load outlined
+pictures to be colored, as in a coloring-book.</p>
+
+<p>The program includes all of the most common drawing tools such as
+lines and brushes for free-hand drawing and coloring, geometric shapes,
+sizing, an eraser, the "Redo" and "Undo" options, plus sound that plays
+while painting and a special tool called "Magic" for impressive effects:
+rainbow, glitter, chalk, blur, flip, and more.</p>
+
+<p>Along with the Magic tool, the other popular feature among children
+is "Stamp", which contains loads of pictures and clip art that can
+be "stamped" on the canvas, such as plants and flowers, animals, holiday
+art, planets, and much more. Many of these stamps are provided with the
+program out of the box, and others are available as separate collections
+to be installed. Many users contribute their own art work to be included
+as stamps in the program; here we are going to see an example of
+how this was done by a group of children from a school in India, thus
+putting into practice the software freedom that the program guarantees.</p>

+that the program is one of the most helpful tools for children to get
+acquainted with basic computer graphic skills while providing a highly
+attractive environment for them. However, the distinctive feature that
+makes Tux Paint preferable to similar drawing software for kids is
+the fact that it is Free Software, meaning it comes with no restrictions
+of any sort and the user is granted a series of freedoms. For example,

+school in the State of Kerala, in India. The work consisted in adding a
+series of stamps to the program, from photographs taken by the students
+themselves. They took pictures of autochthonous flowers and processed
+the digital images with the free libre GNU Image Manipulation Program
+<a href= "http://directory.fsf.org/project/gimp/";>GIMP</a>, adding also
+the name of each flower in English and in Malayalam, the local language.
+As Tux Paint has a sound function, students also recorded with their own
+voices the name of the flowers in Malayalam, so when one of these
+flowers is chosen to be stamped onto the canvas, the user will see and
+hear the name of the flower in Malayalam.

+<p>An additional useful activity done by this school by applying the
+freedom to modify the program, was the translation of the Tux Paint
+interface into Malayalam, the language spoken in the state of Kerala.</p>
+
+<h3>Why</h3>
+
+<p>The freedom to modify the program is an important resource that was
+used by the school to reach beyond the scope of teaching basic computer
+graphical skills or entertaining children. It was used to show them
+that information technology is not something to be subjected to, not
+something that should be imposed upon the user, but an instrument to
+serve users according to their requirements.</p>
+
+<p>The freedom to install the program in all computers in the Lab was
+also important, since the school has limited economical resources to
+invest in licenses. By distributing copies of the original and modified
+version of the program to the students, the school provided
+assistance to families undergoing economic hardship.</p>
+
+<h3>Results</h3>
+
+<p>Adding stamps to Tux Paint was an exciting and enriching experience
+for the students. First, they analyzed how the program works and
+discovered the mechanism that the program uses for the implementation
+of stamps. Then they learned how this particular characteristic of the
+program permitted the addition of stamps and how to do it. They also
+acquired a deeper knowledge of GIMP during the manipulation of the
+images. The whole process gave them an opportunity not only to develop
+new technical abilities, but also to identify and appreciate local
+flora. Most importantly, they learned that anyone, even non programmers
+or children, can actually influence and improve information
+technology when software freedom is granted.</p>
