So, `HOSTALIASES` is not portable. There's some old bug reports of it not
working on OSX and I'm not sure if it is available in the mingw environment or
in BSD. The support for HOSTALIASES seems to come from glibs directly and maybe
it is not supported by other libc implementations.
As a result, I think the best way forward would indeed be to use
`--dns-cache-preload`
