One of the things that it took a while to sink in, and I can see some
others have had the problem also, is that's GNU's Not Unix. The extent
to which it's not didn't really sink in until I read Mr Bushnell's
paper, Towards a New Strategy of OS Design (currently at
http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/hurd-paper.html). I'd suggest pushing
this document as a developer's introduction to the Hurd; or more so than
it is currently.
