[vile] That ...working working... message

I have a simple (trivial really) macro that inserts some text into a
file being edited.  It invokes a GUI to select a date so takes as long
as the user ponders over the date.  While the GUI calendar is popped up
the vile terminal window just shows "...working   working..." and not
the text  being edited.

Is there any way the display of the text can be retained while waiting
for the external command to complete?
