Are there any other remote things that might use a ? * or [ into their
identifier? Part of a username, filename, hostname or something? The
odd * in old mainframe stuff?
I suppose if designing a new remote you'd escape * or ? so as not to
look like shell patterns, though [ has quite a nice look except that
find-file does the wrong thing with it ...
