With mailman you can avoid subscriptions, you can make it private (nobody can
see that it exists), etc.

Could be, but on the other hand, a list management software offers other stuff,
like the archives, if you are going to be off-line for a while you can change
your subscription and then catch up later with messages by visiting the
archives, etc, etc.
I think that we should use mailman even for minimal mailing lists.
