Hi Jeff,
That looks excellent, low profile and very functional.
The 'inhouse' thing had more to do with where the files are physically located. My client has expressed a desire for controlling the repository. I am sure he would be more than happy to list embedit as a sponsor or include a 'powered by' or things of that nature, in addition to the branding that is embedded in the viewer itself. But the actual files must be hosted 'in full' on his server.
I would be very happy to work with you on this.

Best Regards,

Joe

We've built a free service called http://embedit.in that might do exactly what you want. At the core it is built off pdf2swf but streams the document to the player page by page, so you can start reading it immediately. I have tested it on files over 100 pages long and it runs with no performance loss, so I would expect it to work great no matter how long the eBooks are.

You can see an embedit in action here:

http://www.increosolutions.com/viewer.php?embed=oCcRDKH46

The next version will support documents where not all pages are the same size, and also support printing and downloading the original pdf as optional extras.

We are about to offer an API for the service and I am more than happy to work with you if you want to easily create 50,000 embedits.

Give it a shot and let me know if it fits your requirements. You mentioned your desire to build it in-house. If you want to remove the embedit.in branding, I'd be happy to talk further.

Enjoy,

Jeff

Hi Guys and Gals,

I stumbled over this thread while trying to solve a problem for a client, basically they were using ajaxdocumentviewer.com which was rubbish, turns out they use pdf2swf and wrap some DRM stuff around it, and charge 4k usd for a viewer which can't handle streaming.

My client is building an online repository for hosting rare free ebooks, some are available from the gutenberg project but many are not english language books. This is especially meant for people in poorer regions where access to print books is unavailable or prohibitively expensive. He has a database and pdf versions of over 50,000 titles some of which are rendered to pdf files over 100mb in size. Using th pdf2swf with no switches renders this to a 300mb swf file.

Streaming capabilities are a must.

I have 0 flash experience but not opposed to getting my hands a bit dirty.
What can I do to get this functionality?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Also I apologize if I've breached some point of mail-list netiquette, I am well versed in this new-fangled hi-tech communication avenue that you young kids like to play with.

Best Regards,
Joe.

Thanks for hijacking my thread.  Roger, since you've been so helpful to me, here are two players I'll be releasing open source shortly.  One is single frame one is flip, both are load on demand.

As to viewers that are already out there, well the source code for
many of them is
available to all who care to look.   Have you downloaded and started on one yet?
Cris, well I'm sure he knows exactly what you want to do with his viewer!

Oh, and ever so coincidentally,  please don't use CAPS, there's a good
chap.  I'm not deaf
you know.  Save that, excitable chap that you are Roger,  for your
mobile phone conversations.

PS  Way off topic, and verging into the jocular and ribald no less!
Enough List noise I think, yes?  ;o)
