I agree completely, I am not sure that swf is the right choice either.
When we first ran into the streaming issues I considered simply serving ghostscript/imagemagick rendered images to the user,
there are issues with file size and some overhead if people want to 'zoom', nothing that can't be overcome, but..
I don't need or necessarily want too much eye-candy, these aren't brochures, they are tomes of intellectual wealth.

I am new to online publishing of pdf sourced material, so I'm not sure what opportunities there are.
Ideally we would like it to display 'out of the box' on most browsers, so flash or plain image is pretty attractive.
Most people would balk at the idea of having to install a viewer (or anything) from a 'random website'.

I don't know what the benefits are regarding postscript.

Best Regards,
Joe.

PS. Yeah you probably are :) but I bet you are a kid at heart none-the-less.

Are you sure that conversion to swf is the way to go?  Hazarding a wild
guess, I'd say it's possible that a good many of the 50k pdf titles have been
carefully rendered, and conversion is undoing all the good work!

Animation isn't everything.  Indeed, sometimes the 'eye candy' can detract
from what you really want and need.  Wouldn't an embedded reader/browser
plug-in do an infinitely better job, and also be more convenient?  There are
plenty of them about as well.  Here is one for Windies,

   http://www.pdf2exe.com/reader.html

it has associated programs.

Had you also considered conversion/rendering to and from postscript?

Regards,

Chris.
