imagemagick does a decent job, unless you're using cmyk pdfs and are trying to convert to the rgb colorspace. Then you run into problems that I haven't figured out - ie

convert -colorspace cmyk <file.pdf> <file.png>

doesn't work as expected. Setting the target to jpg preserves the colors, but doesn't create a file that's viewable in a web browser (CMYK JPGs aren't supported by most browsers).

In other words, good luck, please share if you discover something that works well. In the meantime, I'll stick with pdf2swf for browser-based pdf previews. :)
