You may have to get an older PNG library. Looks like APIs have changed since then. I don’t have the source code in front of me, but see if configure has a —without-pngdir or —disable-png.
Actually Daniels' trick (LANG=C LC_TYPE=C) can solve this problem, however, I got another error message:
