Does it do ok on Windows XP? Or is this a "sooner or later you have to install it on
Linux" situation?
Technically, Swarm for Java works fine on XP. In some sense, it is the easiest to deploy since the DLLs that contain Swarm are all `sealed', unlike with Unix. The Java implementation for Windows is probably the one that gets the most attention from Sun, and thus the most bug-free and fastest. For parameter sweeps, by far the dominant OS for clusters is Linux (or Solaris). So it is useful to learn some skills getting around on a Unix machine.

With Swarm as in other things, you'll probably get the most benefit if you copy the habits of the people you work with, especially if you are just starting..
