I went through some similar questions a few months back, and answers
were hard won, so I can share what I found.

EVO folded. It is not being supported anymore, which I was very
dissappointed to finally discover. There was apparently insufficient
interest, though it seemed very interesting to me. I did get the code
before the webpage was dismantled, though, so I could send it, but
probably better to get it from the author (M. Krumpus) if you can get
through to him.

I finally began to use JAWAS, an environment that came out of Vrije
Universiteit (to study the evolution of communication).
(http://www.cs.vu.nl/ci/eci/). It didn't turn out to be very perfect
for our needs, but we've stripped it down a lot. It has decent
mutation operators, and my friend and I specifically overhauled the
inheritance operators in it (which we will be happy to share with
you). But it too is based on a 2d grid...

Good luck,

1. Does anyone know what happened to the EVO code and project? The
omicrongroup website is not findable, etc.

2. We are looking for evolutionary swarm code, in which critters are
born, die, and pass on mutated genetics. We are also interested in
groupings of critters that don't depend on a "geographic" (2d cell)
model. Does anyone know of code to base our models on? I couldn't
find anything in the apps, but maybe I didn't look hard enough.
