I don't know what "BatchDemo" is, but the thing I always tell people is 
this:

get swarmapps-2.1.1.tar.gz, untar, try to make and run those programs. 
If they work, it means your swarm install is good. Then you can go on to 
try some java models.

I don't know of any Swarm java apps that you can run by just typing 
"java" actually, so that might be the first problem.
