2 people have reported during the past few months that they install the RPMS I give for hdf5 and Swarm and then when they run programs, the system says
$ ./sss
Illegal instruction

I got an account on of these trouble machines (thanks Bill) and I rebuilt swarm, dropping options and features until I found the hdf5 support was the problem. Build swarm without that, all is well!

So the problem arises when I build hdf5 on my machine and send it to theirs. Can you give me an idea of the source of this trouble? Does it happen because of differences in binutils, gcc, glibc, or what?

We all start with the same basic RedHat 7.3 system, but somewhere along the way the problem arises.

The RPMs in question are:

http://lark.cc.ku.edu/~pauljohn/Swarm/Swarm-2.2x_RPMSforRH7.3/hdf5-1.4.3-1RH73.i386.rpm
http://lark.cc.ku.edu/~pauljohn/Swarm/Swarm-2.2x_RPMSforRH7.3/swarm-2.1.140.20020514-1.i386.rpm

The problem does not come up on any of my machines or machines in my lab . Several people say the RPMs work fine on their systems.

And the gdb info is:

(gdb) run
Starting program: /home/pauljohn/swarm/sss-2.1/sss

Program received signal SIGILL, Illegal instruction.
