Marcus,

The original syntax DOES work with -O2 (and no -g).
It does NOT work with -O3 and no -g.

Interestingly, this version which you suggested:

const char* 
skip_typespec (const char *intype)
{
  const char *type = skip_type_qualifiers (intype);  

does NOT work with the default -O2 -g , either!!!

Note that this is not the same problem as the argp.h problem.
I'll get back to you about that in a different message.
(after I read more about your patching experience...we have
made from scratch a version with some of your patches,
but I guess not all of them.)   (I'm not a fan of rpm's,
I like to roll my own as much as possible.)
