Yes, not a problem... if you find a command-line client that can fetch the
number of mails you have (or be used in such a way that this information can
be inferred, using tools like sed and awk).
My current solution is:
1. have a "real" system tray (mine is `stalonetray')
2. have the `mail-notification' applet in it.
I don't say this is the preferred solution, but more a way I found to work
around this.
Moreover, I needed one system tray for tools like "network manager". So...
