Thanks for trying to help me with this problem as well...

I don't find such files (never really played with X, my knowledge of it being
much to small for that):

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
address@hidden ~>ls .x*
.xsession-errors

address@hidden ~>ls .X*
.Xauthority  .Xdefaults  .Xmodmap
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

Here the contents of `~/.Xdefaults':

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
urxvt.scrollBar_right: true
urxvt.cursorBlink: true
urxvt.background: black
urxvt.foreground: grey
urxvt*font: xft:Consolas:size=9
urxvt*boldFont: xft:Consolas:size=9:style=Bold
urxvt.saveLines: 5000
urxvt.urlLauncher: firefox
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

Here the ones of `~/.Xmodmap':

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
! If you look in `/etc/gdm/Xsession', you will see that:
! usermodmap="$HOME/.Xmodmap"
! That's why the file should be named `.Xmodmap' instead of `.xmodmaprc'.

! Keycodes on the Sony Vaio:
!     133  Super_L
!      66  Caps Lock

!
keycode 133 = F20

!
clear Lock
keycode 66 = F19
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

(`~/.Xauthority' is a binary file)

Are there other files I would have to look for, or other spots?

I've looked for files like:

- `~/.gnome2/gnome-session'
- `~/.gnome2/session'

but did not find any.

Though, I found the following directories:

- `~/.compiz/session'
- `~/.config/gnome-session' (only contains `saved-session/' which is empty)

which I both completely deleted...

No, you misunderstood, or I "miswrote"...

I said I got the message that the X session did not even last 10 seconds:

   "Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out
    yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that
    you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe
    sessions to see if you can fix this problem.

    View details (~/.xsession-errors file)"

Here, it's not because I did log out quickly, but simply because StumpWM did
not even start (at least, I did not see any message originating from StumpWM).

In my `/etc/X11/xorg.conf', I already had:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
Section "Module"
   Load "glx"
EndSection
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

I added:
- Load "dri"
- Load "extmod"
to get the same contents (is order important?).

I restarted my laptop and tried to use StumpWM. Same problem as always
(immediate crash).

I logged in Gnome and checked if I had the extensions loaded, like this:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
xdpyinfo | grep -i misc
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

On the above Web page, they say I should see output like this:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
XC-MISC
XFree86-Misc
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

I only see:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
XC-MISC
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

Is that a problem?

FYI, here is the current contents of `~/.xsession-errors' for my last log in
to StumpWM (5 minutes ago):

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
