"Kumpel" is unisex. You can say "Sie ist ein Kumpel."  You also may say "Sie ist eine Kumpeline"
"Kumpela" is something i have never heard in my native german speaking life the past 43 years. But maybe in some regions of germany which i never did visit. ;)

YOUR Girlffriend would be "Sie ist (!)meine(!) Freundin."
just A friend would be "Sie ist (!)eine(!) Freundin."
well, nobody said that german is easy. ;)
