Seems like a common error on *BSD. As Johan said, use Gnu make, gmake, instead
of BSD make.

ksh would be my choice of the two. I believe most folks are probably using bash.

OS X (x86) was pretty easy. I used the Ocaml .dmg (3.12.0) from the main ocaml
site the last time I built my hg repo,
https://johnclizbe-sks-keyserver.googlecode.com/hg/. The first time I used
MacPorts for ocaml and db47. It was just proof-of-concept work, so I haven't put
anything together for firing it off under launchd
Can't help on OpenBSD. I use FreeBSD and pulled sks from ports for the initial
setup.
I was about to build sks on Solaris 10 x86 when your mail arrived. It should be
fairly easy until I start on the SMF part. I'm presently using db51, so I'll
have to build it and ocaml first.
